Although the competition between the two clubs has always been fierce, the rivalry has its roots in the days of the industrial revolution when the two cities were setting out to become powerful commercial forces to be reckoned with.

Manchester City´s search for their first major trophy since 1976 continues following their defeat against crosstown rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday. Manchester City were 2–1 ahead from the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi Finals last week, but a well placed header from England international frontman Wayne Rooney saw The Manchester Reds advance to the Football League Cup Final 4–3 on aggregate.

Manchester United lock horns with old foes Manchester City at Old Trafford for the second leg of the Carling Cup Semi Final this Wednesday. Unfortunately, Gary Neville could now face disciplinary action for his behaviour towards Carlos Tevez during the first leg at Eastlands where he made a gesture from the touchline as the previous Manchester United marksman celebrated his first goal in Manchester City’s 2–1 victory.

Belfast born George Best started out with Manchester United and made an immediate impact on the game after making his club debut in a 1–0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion in September 1963. The exceptionally gifted striker went on to become a regular in a team of the greatest players ever seen and he proved to be such a footballing great the Manchester United faithful believed he never could be replaced.

Four goals from trigger happy marksman Wayne Rooney killed off The Tigers as Manchester United dismantled Hull City to the tune of 4–0 at Old Trafford on Saturday. Rooney rifled Manchester United into the lead in the seventh minute of the game, then two goals within just a few minutes from the prolific forward completed his hat trick before he grabbed his fourth goal of the afternoon in the 90th minute of play.

Manchester United could go to the very top of the top flight table with a win over Hull City this upcoming weekend. Phil Browns´s hard working players managed a highly respectable draw against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last week but the battling club are yet to have won away in the league this campaign and they go into Saturday´s match against Manchester United just one point above the relegation zone.

Although Edinburgh born Lou Macari has always underplayed his Italian roots, many people have regarded him as an icon for the Scottish Italian community. Macari started out with Celtic where the forward rapidly established himself as a regular in the all conquering Parkhead side of the early seventies and went on to gain two Scottish Cup medals and two Scottish League Championships under the guidance of Jock Stein.

Roberto Mancini´s Manchester City team came from behind to edge out their crosstown rivals Manchester United 2–1 in the Football League Cup Semi Final first leg at the City of Manchester Stadium on Tuesday thanks to two goals from Carlos Tevez. This was perhaps the biggest Manchester derby since August 1969 when Manchester City and Manchester United shared the spoils in goalless draw at Maine Road.

Manchester United meet crosstown rivals Manchester City at Eastands tonight for the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi Final, which was postponed a fortnight ago due to weather conditions. To the despair of Sir Alex Ferguson, key players Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs are both likely to miss out with injuries, while Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves, John O’Shea and Nemanja Vidic are all long term absentees.
