McIlroy was spotted by legendary talent scout Bob Bishop while still a schoolboy player and was adviced to seek his football fortune in the calmer climes of England as Northern Ireland was tottering on the brink of Civil War.

Manchester United moved into third place in the Barclays Premier League table thanks to a well earned 3–0 triumph against Avram Grant’s West Ham United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. In a somewhat one sided encounter, the East Londoners were denied their first points of the season as a first half penalty from England player Wayne Rooney set Manchester United on their way to a highly convincing home victory.

Manchester United take on West Ham United at Old Trafford on Saturday, having the edge over their visitors in previous meetings. Manchester United have taken four points from their opening two league matches, beating Newcastle United 3–0 at home before drawing 2–2 to Fulham at Craven Cottage last Sunday. Having fallen to heavy defeats at Aston Villa and at home to Bolton in their opening two matches, West Ham are still without a single point so far. Although Rio Ferdinand is still out, Wayne Rooney will return for Manchester United after recovering from stomach pains.
Sir Alex Ferguson Calls for Unity

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned the Manchester United supporters he doesn’t want the protest against the club owners to affect his players. The Scot has called for unity as he fears the ongoing campaign against the Glazers could wreck United’s bid for a record breaking 19th league title. The Glazers were never welcomed by the fans and came under heavy fire from the protest movement last season. Manchester United being the most prominent global brand in football, the Glazer family have always maintained that the club is not for sale and that they will not be pressurised into selling.

Although most people expected Manchester United to take the three points against Fulham on Sunday afternoon, the visiting team could only manage a 2–2 draw in a highly dramatic match at Craven Cottage. Manchester United went ahead after eleven minutes, however, when the irrepressible Dimitar Berbatov laid the ball back for evergreen midfield workhorse Paul Scholes to finish past Fulham´s deputy goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Manchester United travel to the banks of the River Thames on Sunday in what promises to be an exciting Premier League encounter against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Managed by former Manchester United marksman Mark Hughes, the West London outfit made an encouraging start to the season with a 0–0 draw against Bolton at Reebok Stadium last Saturday. Despite the fact Fulham recorded a surprise result when they beat Manchester United 3–0 at home last season, the Mancunians are favourites to beat the Cottagers following their convincing win against Newcastle.

Manchester City taking their summer spending close to the £130 million mark has left Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson absolutely stunned and he has now launched an attack at the neighbourring club by condemning their spending habits. In their bid to propel the Blues towards the top end of the top four, the Abu Dhabi United Group have spent almost £350 million since they acquired the club in 2008. By comparison, Ferguson has invested a modest £25 million this summer as he knows splashing out huge sums of cash is not the only way to ensure future success.

Manchester United started the new Premier League campaign in grand style on Monday night as Sir Alex Ferguson’s players beat newly promoted Newcastle United 3–0 thanks to goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Fletcher, and Ryan Giggs. Although it took half an hour for Manchester United to find the back of the net the confident hosts completely dominated yesterday’s encounter at Old Trafford. Despite the new foreign contigent at Manchester United, it was former England international Paul Scholes who grabbed the headlines with a most impressive performance.
