The Spaniards controlled large parts of the match in midfield but a close range header from England captain Frank Lampard in the 49th minute of the friendly match saw the determined and hard working home team running out 1–0 winners.

The Three Lions manager has decided, however, to leave Wayne Rooney out of the squad for the game as the prolific Manchester United goal poacher will be suspended for the first three matches of the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill announced before the Premier League encounter with Steve Bruce´s Sunderland that the club have renamed their North stand after manager Sir Alex Ferguson in honour of his 25 years of dedicated service to the Old Trafford side.

An own goal from unfortunate defender Wes Brown handed Manchester United a narrow 1–0 triumph against a struggling Sunderland team at Old Trafford on Saturday. Shortly before the sound of the half time signal, the former Manchester United and England favourite managed to deflect a header from Danny Welbeck into the back of his own net to give Sir Alex Ferguson´s players their fourth consecutive win.
