Born in the village of Corbridge, Steve Bruce ignited his soccer career at Gillingham where he played over 200 games before he was transferred to Norwich City for a fee of £125,000 at the start of the 1984–85 campaign. While at Carrow Road, Bruce appeared in 141 league matches for The Canaries before the dependable all round player joined Manchester United for a transfer fee in the region of £850,000 in December 1987.
The Dynamic Alan Gowling

Born in nearby Stockport, Alan Gowling made his First Division debut for Manchester United in a convincing 4–2 victory away to Stoke City in March 1968. Strong and deceptively quick for a big player, the dynamic forward made a total of 87 appearances for Manchester United before new manager Frank O´Farrell sold him to newly relegated Second Division Huddersfield Town for a transfer fee of £65,000 at the end of the 1971–72 campaign.

An Aberdeen local, Denis Law initiated his career playing for Aberdeen Lads Club before he left the Granite City to team up with Huddersfield Town in 1955. The Law Man soon became an automatic selection and Matt Busby reputedly wanted the forward to play for Manchester United but was turned down and instead he went to bitter rivals Manchester City who paid a record transfer fee of £55,000 for him in March 1960.
