Prom­ising Manchester United young­ster Danny Drink­wa­ter has joined Foot­ball League Cham­pi­on­ship out­fit Leicester City for an undis­closed trans­fer free. The Manchester born mid­field player signed a trainee con­tract with The Reds at the end of the 2005-06 cam­paign and has pre­vi­ously been loaned out to Hud­der­sfield Town, Cardiff City, Wat­ford and Barns­ley in order to acquire valu­able first team experience.

Hail­ing from Hamilton, David Herd ini­ti­ated his pro­fes­sional career with Stock­port County where the young and tal­en­ted striker clocked up 15 league appear­ances before he was sold to Arsenal for £10,000 in 1954. After scor­ing 107 goals in 180 games for The Gun­ners, the nat­ural born hit­man was signed by Manchester United man­ager Matt Busby for a trans­fer fee of £35,000 at the begin­ning of the 1961–62 campaign.

Accord­ing to the latest news reports, Manchester United mid­field work­horse Dar­ren Fletcher is in danger of miss­ing the start of the upcom­ing cam­paign due to a per­sist­ent stom­ach virus. Because of his ill­ness, the Scot­land inter­na­tional failed to return for pre-season train­ing at Car­ring­ton two weeks ago and the player was left behind when the Manchester United squad flew out for their 2011 sum­mer tour of the United States.

A Manchester local, John Aston star­ted his pro­fes­sional career at Manchester United and made his first league appear­ance for the club in a 1–1 draw against Leicester City at Old Traf­ford in April 1965. The exhil­ar­at­ing left winger, whose father also played for Manchester United, helped The Red Dev­ils win the First Divi­sion Cham­pi­on­ship in 1966–67 as well as the unfor­get­table European Cup Final against Ben­fica at Wemb­ley Sta­dium in May 1968.

Born and grow­ing up in Glas­gow, Scott McGar­vey made his first appear­ance in the league for Manchester United when he came on as a sub­sti­tute in a con­vin­cing 5–0 tri­umph against Leicester City at Old Traf­ford in Septem­ber 1980. Fail­ing to live up to the expect­a­tions, McGar­vey man­aged to play 25 league matches for Manchester United before he was dis­patched to Second Divi­sion side Ports­mouth for a fee of £85,000 in the sum­mer of 1984.

The FA Cup Final at Wemb­ley Sta­dium in 1963 sig­nalled a new golden era for Manchester United as they defeated Leicester City 3–1 with a goal from Denis Law and two from David Herd. Matt Busby´s Manchester United side gradu­ally took con­trol of the match and the open­ing goal came after 30 minutes of play when Paddy Crerand found Denis Law who man­aged to knock the ball into the back of the net to give his club a fully deserved lead.
