In the month of Novem­ber 1971, Manchester United and North­ern Ire­land favour­ite George Best man­aged to hit his second hat trick of the sea­son against releg­a­tion bat­tling Southamp­ton at The Dell. Brian Kidd and Sammy McIl­roy also made the score sheet to round-off a bril­liant away per­form­ance by The Reds as they won 5–2.

McIl­roy was spot­ted by Bob Bishop while still a school­boy player and was adviced to seek his foot­ball for­tune in the calmer climes of Eng­land as his coun­try was tot­ter­ing on the brink of Civil War.
