Reportedly, Sir Alex Ferguson has backed former Manchester United favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to replace him when he finally decides to call it a day. A versatile attacker with an explosive shot, Solskjaer scored on his Manchester United debut against local rivals Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford in August 1996 and racked up 126 goals in 366 matches for The Reds before retiring from the game in August 2007.

A youthful and inexperienced Manchester United side were narrowly defeated 2–1 by a determined and well organised Crystal Palace at their Old Trafford home in the Carling Cup Quarter Final on Wednesday night. In what was a very close and evenly contested encounter, the two teams could not be separated until Crystal Palace forward Glenn Murray scored the winning goal in the eight minute of extra time.
