Born in Enniskillen, Roy Carroll began his goalkeeping career with local teams Fivemiletown United and Ballinamallard United before the dependable shot stopper decided to team up with Second Division Hull City in the spring of 1995. After making 46 league outings for The Tigers, Carroll eventually left Boothferry Park for Wigan Athletic for a then club record fee of £350,000 at the end of the 1996–97 campaign.

Manchester United´s unselfish midfield workhorse Paul Scholes has decided to finish his long and illustrious professional soccer career with immediate effect. After a footballing career spanning almost two decades and 150 goals in 676 first class appearances for Manchester United, Scholes has declined a one-year contract extension from the club and the former England midfielder will now take up a coaching role at Old Trafford next campaign.

A Manchester local, John Aston started his professional career at Manchester United and made his first league appearance for the club in a 1–1 draw against Leicester City at Old Trafford in April 1965. The exhilarating left winger, whose father also played for Manchester United, helped The Red Devils win the First Division Championship in 1966–67 as well as the unforgettable European Cup Final against Benfica at Wembley Stadium in May 1968.

A native of Neath in South Glamorgan, Clayton Blackmore made his league debut for Manchester United in a 2–0 loss away to Nottingham Forest in May 1984. The multifunctional player contributed much to the success of Manchester United’s endeavours in the early 1990s, helping the club win the 1990 FA Cup, the 1992 Football League Cup, the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as the Premier League in 1992–93.

Manchester United are hot favourites to defeat Schalke at Old Trafford in the second leg of the Champions League Semi Final this Wednesday. Sir Alex Ferguson´s players thumped Schalke 2–0 in Gelsenkirchen, where the Bundesliga outfit had previously been undefeated in this season’s European tournament. The Reds have been very strong at home this season and should seal their place in the final at Wembley Stadium without too much bother.

Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure scored the only goal of the match to send Manchester City into the FA Cup Final for the first time since 1981. Sir Alex Ferguson´s Manchester United side nevertheless opened the game quite well and should have netted already in the 15th minute of the encounter when Dimitar Berbatov had two golden goal scoring opportunities inside a minute but the free flowing frontman wasted both of them.
