David Herd

David Herd was the man of the match as Matt Busby´s Manchester United recorded their biggest home win of the 1966–67 campaign with a 5–0 success against Sunderland at Old Trafford in November 1966. The natural born goal plunderer scored four of the goals with fellow Scotland player Denis Law also making the score sheet.

Sunderland boss Ian McColl could only sit and watch in disbelief as Manchester United trashed the plucky Roker Park side to the tune of 5–0. Scotland international David Herd opened the scoring with a ferocious shot leaving Sunderland goalkeeper Jim Montgomery completely helpless. An accomplished and powerful centre forward, Herd went on to score three more goals before the match official finally signalled the end of the game. During his Manchester United playing career, David Herd managed to notch up an impressive 145 goals in 265 first team appearances for the club between 1961 and 1968.
