Gordon Hill

Gordon Hill began his rollercoaster career with Millwall where he emerged as a promising outside left under the indulgent stewardship of Benny Fenton. After spending the summer of 1975 appearing for North American Soccer League Chicago Sting, the talented winger made a move to Manchester United for a transfer fee of £70,000.

Gordon Hill made his First Divison debut for Manchester United in a convincing 2–0 win against Aston Villa at Old Trafford and the Londoner quickly made his presence felt by forming a formidable wing partnership with his fellow flankman Steve Coppell. During the 1975–76 campaign, Manchester United injected loads of positivity into English soccer with an adventurous approach to attacking football which suited his playing style perfectly and he scored both goals in the FA Cup Semi Final against Derby County in 1976 as he helped The Red Devils reach the final only to lose against Second Division Southampton. The Cockney player returned to Wembley the following year, however, to pick up an FA Cup winner’s medal when Tommy Docherty´s side edged out their historical enemies Liverpool by 2–1. After making over 100 Football League outings for Manchester United, Hill would leave the Old Trafford club in the spring of 1978 when the rocket-heeled flanker was sold to fellow First Division team Derby County for a transfer fee of around £250,000. Gordon Hill made his full international debut for England in an evenly contested 3–2 success against Italy at Yankee Stadium in May 1976 and went on to gain a total of six senior caps for his native country before he decided to leave for the United States in 1981 where he starred for a string of North American clubs. Gordon Hill: “I did not earn a lot of money at my first club Millwall. I was on £25-a-week with £20 for a win, ten for a draw, and nothing for a loss. I moved on to Manchester United, and I was on £125-a-week with £40 for a win, £20 for a draw, and nothing for a loss.” Gordon Hill Playing Career: Millwall 1973–1975, Manchester United 1975–1978, Derby County 1978–1979, Queens Park Rangers 1979–1981, Montreal Manic 1981–1982, Chicago Sting 1982, Inter Montreal 1983, FC Twente 1985–1986, HJK Helsinki 1986, Stafford Rangers 1986–1988, Northwich Victoria 1988, Nova Scotia Clippers 1991. On Loan: Chicago Sting 1975. International Playing Career: England U23 1976,  England  1976–1977. Club Honours: FA Cup 1977.
