Born and bred in Southport, Jimmy Rimmer signed professional terms with Manchester United at the beginning of the 1965–66 campaign. After making his First Division debut for Manchester United in a 3–0 win against at home to Fulham in April 1968, the deputy goalkeeper managed to make only 34 league appearances for the club before he was loaned out to Fourth Division side Swansea City in the autumn of 1973.
While with Swansea City, Jimmy Rimmer managed to recapture his old form and the shot stopper left Manchester United the following year when he received a new lease of life by shrewd Arsenal manager Bertie Mee who brought him to Highbury for a bargain transfer fee of £40,000 in February 1974. A doughty and dependable goalkeeper, Rimmer went on to appear in 124 league games for the North London club before new manager Terry Neill sold him to ambitious Aston Villa whom he helped win the First Division Championship title in 1980–81. Jimmy Rimmer finally left Aston Villa at the end of the 1982–83 season when he decided to join forces with old club Swansea where he stayed until 1986.
Jimmy Rimmer won his only England cap in a 3–2 win against Italy in 1976.
