Manchester United Demolish Roma

On Tues­day, April 10, 2007 Manchester United advanced to the Semi Finals of the UEFA Cham­pi­ons League after giv­ing Roma a trash­ing they will prob­ably never for­get. The Italian team nev­er­the­less star­ted the match on a rel­at­ively bright note with a couple of early attempts when mid­fielder David Pizarro first hammered a long drive wide before Francesco Totti came close to score with a fero­cious effort from 25-yards out.

Shortly after Michael Car­rick opened the scor­ing for Manchester United as he received the ball from Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo and his clever shot curled past the goal­keeper to put the home side ahead. The second goal of the match came when Ryan Giggs passed the ball to Alan Smith who went on to net for the first time since com­ing back from injury. A third goal was scored just a few minutes later when Wayne Rooney put yet another ball behind the Roma goal­tender after a bril­liant cross ball from Giggs. Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo would then score one more goal for Manchester United, mak­ing the score read 4–0 before the interval.

After 49 minutes of play, Manchester United were to score again when the ever present Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo tapped home another per­fect cross ball from Wales inter­na­tional Ryan Giggs. Michael Car­rick then blas­ted the ball into the top corner to score the sixth goal of the Cham­pi­ons League encounter before Roma got their con­sol­a­tion goal as Daniele De Rossi man­aged to vol­ley a cross from Francesco Totti into the back of  the net after 69 minutes. Sub­sti­tute Patrice Evra made it 7–1 in the 81st minute, how­ever, when the attack minded defender hammered the ball behind Alex­an­der Doni in the Roma goal.
