On the last day of the 2005-06 campaign on the seventh of May 2006, Manchester United defeated Alan Curbishley´s Charlton Athletic team to the tune of 4–0 at The Theatre of Dreams. The convincing win over the South East London outfit sealed second place in the Premiership and with it automatic qualification into the Champions League.
Manchester United got off to a blistering start and were two goals up within the first 23 minutes. French international striker Louis Saha opened the scoring for the hosts when he headed home a well executed flag kick from Ryan Giggs in the nineteenth minute of the contest. Portugal frontrunner Cristiano Ronaldo followed up by adding a second goal as the trigger happy marksman tapped home from close range just four minutes later. On a bleak afternoon for Charlton Athletic, the Manchester United players went into a fully deserved 3–0 lead thanks to an own goal from Jason Euell some ten minutes before the half time whistle. To make things even worse for the visitors, England international Kieran Richardson eventually went on to score with a ferocious strike in the 58th minute of the encounter to make the final score read 4–0 in the favour of The Mancunians.
