Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher made his first appearance for his native Scotland in almost twelve months in the 2014 World Cup European Qualifying match against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday. James Morrison put Scotland ahead in the first half but two late goals from Gareth Bale gave Wales a 2–1 win.
Darren Fletcher was forced to take an extended break from the game of football after he was diagnosed with a serious bowel condition back in December last year. The Scotland international made his Manchester United comeback, however, when he came on as a second period substitute in a 2–1 defeat against Aberdeen at Pittodrie in Neil Simpson’s testimonial in August this year. After being sidelined for nearly a year, the dynamic midfield playmaker entered the field as a replacement for summer signing Nick Powell in the 60th minute of the friendly encounter. Darren Fletcher: “I want to play everything down about coming back and being an inspiration to people. For the time being I am back and that is all I can ask for. I still have to fight it every day and that is not going to change. It never goes away and that is the thing I have to live with now. I have to watch my diet and take certain medication or it could come back again. It is a battle every day. I am never going to be 100 per cent and that is something I must live with for the rest of my life.”
