Manchester United held fellow title contenders Liverpool to a 1–1 draw at Anfield Road on Saturday. A ferocious free kick from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard in the 68th minute of the derby match put the home side ahead before Manchester United forward Javier Hernadez levelled the scoreline when he converted a tricky corner from Portugal winger Nani with only nine minutes remaining on the referee´s clock.
Although Sir Alex Ferguson dropped Javier Hernandez, Nani and Wayne Rooney to the bench against Liverpool, Manchester United started on a bright note and they should have taken the lead on 15 minutes when a Patrice Evra cross was met by Phil Jones but the summer signing from Blackburn Rovers headed wide. In the 33rd minute of play, Luis Suarez tried his luck only to see his effort saved by Manchester United goaltender David de Gea. The Liverpool supporters screamed for a penalty kick just five minutes into the second period when a header from Dirk Kuyt struck the arm of Northern Ireland player Jonny Evans but referee Andre Marriner just waved play on. In the 68th minute of the encounter, a pretty wild challenge by Rio Ferdinand on former Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam resulted in a free kick which England international Steven Gerrard slotted through the Manchester United wall to put Kenny Dalglish´s Liverpool team ahead. After 81 minutes, however, the visiting side finally pulled themselves back on to equal terms when a clever flag kick from Nani allowed goal poacher supreme Javier Hernandez to head home from close range. Even though Manchester United managed to maintain their unbeaten run, they are now two points behind The Abu Dhabi Group Eleven.
