Manchester United comfortably defeated Queens Park Rangers 2–0 at Old Trafford on Sunday. Wayne Rooney scored the first goal of the match from the penalty spot after 15 minutes of action before Paul Scholes made it 2–0 to Manchester United with a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the 68th minute of the encounter.
Queens Park Rangers put in a highly spirited performance against Manchester United, but two goals either side of the break gave Sir Alex Ferguson´s title challengers the victory. A mere 15 minutes into the first half, Manchester United were awarded a penalty kick when England international winger Ashley Young was brought down inside the area by Queens Park Rangers skipper Shaun Derry who was somewhat harshly red carded by referee Lee Mason. Wayne Rooney stepped up and the trigger happy marksman made no mistakes from the spot to give Manchester United a fully deserved 1–0 lead. The Manchester Reds eventually sealed the victory in the 68th minute of the play when former England player Paul Scholes hammered home from some 20 yards out to make the scoreline read 2–0 in the favour of the home side. Fellow midfielder Michael Carrick almost netted the third goal shortly afterwards but his thunderbolt effort hit the inside of the post and flew across the face of the goal. Once again, Paul Scholes took the eye with an excellent performance and the classic multifunctional midfield playmaker was applauded off the field by the home fans when he eventually was replaced by Tom Cleverley in the 74th minute. With Roberto Mancini´s Manchester City side losing narrowly 1–0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium yesterday, the red shirts are now eight points ahead of their old rivals. Manchester United Team: David de Gea, Rafael, Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Paul Scholes, Valencia, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck.
