Manchester United Trash Scunthorpe
September 23, 2010 by Chris Marker · 1 Comment
The Carling Cup Third Round tie between Scunthorpe United and Manchester United at Glanford Park yesterday was probably the biggest event in the history of The Iron. The hosts took the lead after 19 minutes when Martyn Woolford found Josh Wright who scored with shot from 25 yards but the visitors hit back as Darron Gibson executed a lob over Joe Murphy on 23 minutes before Chris Smalling scored a second goal after 36 minutes.
Veteran player Michael Owen scored his first goal of the night four minutes into the second half, giving Manchester United a 3–1 lead. Just six minutes later Owen headed a corner from Anderson back across the penalty area for midfield workhorse Ji-Sung Park to score the fifth goal of the game. The former England and Liverpool star then netted his second in the 71st minute of play as he calmly tucked the ball into the back of the net from close range. With 16 minutes remaining, summer signing Bebe replaced Park and instantly made his mark with an impressive run and a great shot that was deflected behind for a corner. Martyn Woolford eventually made the final score read 5–2 in Manchester United’s favour when the fast flankman scored Scunthorpe’s second goal in stoppage time.
Manchester United lost 2–1 to Bradford in the League Cup in November 1960.
