The Carling Cup Third Round tie between Scun­thorpe United and Manchester United at Glan­ford Park yes­ter­day was prob­ably the biggest event in the his­tory of The Iron. The hosts took the lead after 19 minutes when Martyn Woolford found Josh Wright who scored with shot from 25 yards but the vis­it­ors hit back as Dar­ron Gib­son executed a lob over Joe Murphy on 23 minutes before Chris Smalling scored a second goal after 36 minutes.

Vet­eran player Michael Owen scored his first goal of the night four minutes into the second half, giv­ing Manchester United a 3–1 lead. Just six minutes later Owen headed a corner from Ander­son back across the pen­alty area for mid­field work­horse Ji-Sung Park to score the fifth goal of the game. The former Eng­land and Liv­er­pool star then net­ted his second in the 71st minute of play as he calmly tucked the ball into the back of the net from close range. With 16 minutes remain­ing, sum­mer sign­ing Bebe replaced Park and instantly made his mark with an impress­ive run and a great shot that was deflec­ted behind for a corner. Martyn Woolford even­tu­ally made the final score read 5–2 in Manchester United’s favour when the fast flank­man scored Scunthorpe’s second goal in stop­page time.
