Blackpool were the superior side by far during the first half of the play but the Manchester United players managed to come back from behind to defeat the home side 3–2 at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday. After finding themselves two goals down at the half time break, Sir Alex Ferguson´s troops came back a lot stronger in the second period and scored three goals in the final stages of the game to snatch all three points from the jaws of defeat.
Blackpool had not defeated Manchester United since they mauled them 5–1 in the League Cup in September 1966, but it was the home side who took the lead when former Manchester United defender Craig Cathcart headed a Charlie Adam corner into the back of the net after 15 minutes of play. The Tangerines doubled their lead just before the break as another corner from Adam found its way to Dudley Junior Campbell who headed home at the back post. Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Darron Gibson with Ryan Giggs at half time and the Welshman´s creativity provided the visiting side with a much needed boost in the second half. The Scot made two more changes to his team in the second period as Javier Hernandez came on for Wayne Rooney, while Anderson replaced Rafael who left the field on a stretcher. The Seasiders looked a reasonable bet to cause an upset until Dimitar Berbatov reduced the deficit by tapping home a Darren Fletcher cross on 72 minutes. Just two minutes later Hernandez drew Manchester United level with a fine finish before Berbatov scored the winner after 88 minutes to give Blackpool the coup de grace.
Manchester United are now five points clear of fellow title contenders Arsenal.
