Scunthorpe V Manchester United 2–5
The Carling Cup Third Round game between Scunthorpe United and Manchester United at Glanford Park yesterday was probably the biggest event ever in the history of The Iron. And although Ian Baraclough´s players took the lead through Josh Wright, The Mancunians were the superior side by far and ended up comfortable 5–2 winners.
Scunthorpe United went into an early lead after nineteen minutes of play when Martyn Woolford found Josh Wright who scored with shot from some twenty-five yards out but the visitors hit back as Darron Gibson executed a lob over home net custodian Joe Murphy on twenty-three minutes before former Fulham defender Chris Smalling produced a second goal after thirty-six minutes. Veteran player Michael Owen then scored his first goal of the night four minutes into the second half, handing Manchester United a 3–1 lead. Some six minutes later, the same man headed a flag kick from Oliveira Anderson back across the penalty area for midfield workhorse Ji-Sung Park to record the fifth goal of the game. The previous Liverpool and England star then netted his second in the 71st minute of play as he calmly tucked the ball into the back of the net from close range. With a mere sixteen minutes remaining, summer signing Bebe replaced Park and instantly made his mark with an impressive run and a brilliant effort which was deflected behind for a corner. Martyn Woolford eventually made the final scoreline read 5–2 in Manchester United’s favour when the bandy-legged flankman scored Scunthorpe’s second goal in stoppage time. Ian Baraclough: “It could have been so different but it was not to be. The lads will not be too down about it. I will not let them be.” Manchester United Team: Tomasz Kuszczak, Rafael Pereira da Silva, Chris Smalling, Rio Ferdinand, Wesley Brown, Darron Gibson, Oliveira Anderson, Ji-Sung Park, Javier Hernandez, Michael Owen, Federico Macheda.
