Manchester United suffered a shock 3–2 loss to old rivals Blackburn Rovers in the luchtime game at Old Trafford on Saturday. After Blackburn had gone into a 2–0 lead thanks to a double from Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Dimitar Berbatov hit twice for Manchester United only for Grant Hanley to net the winner for the visitors with ten minutes left.
In the 16th minute of the derby encounter, Blackburn Rovers were awarded a penalty which Yakubu Aiyegbeni subsequently converted to put the Ewood Park outfit ahead. To make things even worse for Manchester United, Yakubu Aiyegbeni scored his second goal of the match a mere six minutes into the second period when the Nigerian international outpaced Phil Jones before he powered the ball through the legs of Spanish net custodian David de Gea. Sir Alex Ferguson´s title challenging team responded instantly as forward thinking wing back Rafael da Silva found Dimitar Berbatov who headed the ball behind Mark Bunn in the Blackburn goal from close range after 52 minutes of action. Only ten minutes later, Berbatov managed to level the score when the Manchester United goal plunderer shot past the Blackburn netminder after Antonio Valencia had cut the ball back from the right-hand byline. Then in the 80th minute of the play, a dreadful mistake from Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea allowed Scotland international Grant Hanley to head home the visitor´s winning goal. Despite the embarrassing 3–2 defeat against Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United are still joint table toppers with neighbouring Manchester City who lost 1–0 against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
