Accord­ing to the latest news reports, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Fer­guson is believed to be ready to make a move for sought after Ajax favour­ite Jan Ver­tonghen. The 25-year-old Bel­gium inter­na­tional has per­formed well this sea­son and has attrac­ted the interest of sev­eral lead­ing clubs, includ­ing Arsenal and Tot­ten­ham Hotspur.

Jan Ver­tonghen made his debut for Dutch Hon­or­ary Divi­sion side Ajax when he came on as a second half sub­sti­tute in a 2–0 defeat against Copen­ha­gen at the Ams­ter­dam Arena back in August 2006. Even­tu­ally, Ver­tonghen came to prom­in­ence under the inspir­a­tional lead­er­ship of like­able Ajax man­ager Mar­tin Jol and the exper­i­enced anchor­man has so far appeared in well over 150 matches for The Amsterdammers. A com­mand­ing and power­ful cent­ral defender, Jan Ver­tonghen has man­aged to accu­mu­late an impress­ive total of 36 inter­na­tional appear­ances for the Bel­gian national team after mak­ing his senior debut for the coun­try of his birth in a nar­row 2–1 loss against Por­tugal in June 2007.
