Manchester United outclassed Bolton Wanderers 5–0 at Reebok Stadium on Saturday evening thanks to a Wayne Rooney treble and two goals from Javier Hernandez. After giving Bolton a footballing lesson that would have had almost every team in the Premier League begging for mercy, Sir Alex Ferguson´s title chasing side now top the top flight table on goal difference ahead of arch rivals Manchester City.
The derby match started at a blistering pace as Manchester United fired on all cylinders in search of an early goal and their efforts were rewarded when Javier Hernandez made the score sheet after only five minutes of play. Nani raced down the right wing and produced a dangerous cross into the path of the goal ace who managed to hammer the ball home at the near post. A goal scorer par excellence, Wayne Rooney got in on the act in the 21st minute of the contest when he studded the ball into the net from six yards out after receiving a difficult cross from Phil Jones. Manchester United´s third arrived a mere five minutes later when an adventurous effort from Jones was parred by Jussi Jaaskelainen only for Rooney to sweep the rebound into the back of the net. After the half time refreshments, the confident Manchester United players continued to play an expansive brand of football. The red shirts eventually added a fourth goal on the hour mark when a powerful drive from Michael Carrick, who came on for the injured Tom Cleverley in the sixth minute, was turned in by Hernandez. Rooney was a constant threat throughout the one sided game and the lethal finisher completed his fine treble when he converted a square pass from Nani to seal the margin of victory in the 68th minute. After fighting his inner demons for a long time, Wayne Rooney has finally managed to come out of his self inflicted hell and shut the mouths of his critics.
