Sir Alex Ferguson´s Manchester United side remain at the top of the Barclays Premier League table after thumping Sunderland 2–0 at The Theatre of Dreams in a one sided contest on Sunday afternoon. Balkan player Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring yesterday with a powerful headed goal in the fifth minute of the encounter and the former Tottehham Hotspur centre forward then added a second goal 12 minutes into the second period.

The Manchester United players emerged as fully deserved winners against fellow title contenders Arsenal at Old Trafford in their last Premier League match, while Steve Bruce´s Sunderland managed to beat Bolton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light.

Born in nearby Stockport, Alan Gowling made his First Division debut for Manchester United in a convincing 4–2 victory away to Stoke City in March 1968. Strong and deceptively quick for a big player, the dynamic forward made a total of 87 appearances for Manchester United before new manager Frank O´Farrell sold him to newly relegated Second Division Huddersfield Town for a transfer fee of £65,000 at the end of the 1971–72 campaign.

Born in Manchester to parents of Irish descent, Shay Brennan leapt into the public consciousness when the defender made his Manchester United debut in an FA Cup Fifth Round match at home to Sheffield Wednesday in February 1958. He established himself in the first team two years later and he played an important part in the brilliant side which won the First Division title in 1965 and 1967 as well as the European Cup in 1968.

Born in Sandefjord, Ronny Johnsen was brought to Manchester United from Besiktas for £1.2 million at the start of the 1996–97 season. After making his league debut for Manchester United as a substitute in a 3–0 victory over Wimbledon at Selhurst Park in August 1996, the classy defender went on to make well over 100 appearances for the club and won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in the process.

Hillingdon born Ray Wilkins joined Chelsea as an apprentice and made his debut against Norwich City in in October 1973 before he established himself as a first team regular the following year. He went on to become Chelsea’s youngest ever captain when he replaced the popular Ron Harris at the age of 18 but when The Blues were relegated to the Second Division in 1979, he was sold to Manchester United shortly after for a fee of £800,000.
