The Underestimated Roy Carroll

Born in Enniskillen, Roy Carroll began his goalkeeping career with local teams Fivemiletown United and Ballinamallard United before the dependable shot stopper decided to team up with Second Division Hull City in the spring of 1995. After making 46 league outings for The Tigers, Carroll eventually left Boothferry Park for Wigan Athletic for a then club record fee of £350,000 at the end of the 1996–97 campaign.

Manchester United managed to bag all three points in the lunch time fixture against local rivals Everton at Goodson Park on Saturday thanks to a goal from Javier Hernandez in the 19th minute of the derby clash. Although The Evertonians came more into the match as Manchester United defended ever deeper, the home side failed to level the score with the game ending 1–0 in favour of Sir Alex Ferguson´s team.

Born and growing up in Johnstone, Jim Leighton initiated his goalkeeping career at Aberdeen where the shot stopper won every domestic honour under the successful leadership of manager Alex Ferguson. Arguably, the greatest achievements of his sporting life were the European Cup Winner’s Cup triumph against Real Madrid in Gothenburg in May 1983 and the Super Cup victory over Hamburg later the same year.

In what turned out to be a one sided affair, Manchester United outclassed League Two team Aldershot to the tune of 3–0 at Recreation Ground in the Football League Cup Fourth Round on Tuesday. After the humiliating 6–1 defeat against fellow title challengers Manchester City at Old Trafford last Sunday, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had changed the whole side for the game against The Shots.

After suffering a 6–1 defeat at home to Manchester City on Sunday, Manchester United prepare to take on League Two outfit Aldershot at Recreation Ground in the Carling Cup this Tuesday. The last time the two clubs played each other was in the Football League Cup way back in August 1971 when Manchester United beat Jimmy Melia´s Aldershot 3–1 thanks to goals from George Best, Brian Kidd and Denis Law.

Manchester United were humiliated by fierce crosstown rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon as braces from Mario Bolatelli and Edin Dzeko along with a goal each from Sergio Ageuro and David Silva gave Roberto Mancini´s team an astonishing 6–1 victory. Sir Alex Ferguson could only sit and watch as Manchester United suffered their first defeat at Old Trafford since losing 2–1 to Chelsea in April 2010.

Wayne Rooney converted two penalties in the second period to give Manchester United a fully deserved 2–0 triumph against Romanian champions Otelul Galati at the National Arena in Bucharest on Tuesday night. Manchester United should have taken the lead a few minutes before the sound of the half time signal, though, but Michael Carrick managed to waste a decent goal scoring opportunity over the bar.

After a hard fought 1–1 draw against fellow title contenders Liverpool at Anfield Road last Saturday, Manchester United take on Otelul Galati at the National Arena in Bucharest this Tuesday night looking for their first Champions League Group C victory. Manchester United drew 3–3 against FC Basel at Old Trafford in their last Champions League match, while Otelul Galati were narrowly defeated 1–0 at home to Benfica.
